Captain's Diary
Captain’s Diary 1989-91

Will Carling is one of England’s most celebrated rugby captains, renowned for his ability to lead, inspire and achieve at the highest level. As the youngest man ever to captain England, and its longest-serving leader with 59 matches at the helm, he transformed the team into a dominant force during the 1990s. Under his leadership, England reached the Rugby World Cup final in 1991, claimed five Grand Slam titles and consistently challenged the world’s best sides. Inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2021 and honoured with both an OBE and CBE, Will is now a sought-after motivational speaker whose insights into leadership, teamwork and resilience resonate far beyond the pitch.

After graduating with a degree in Psychology, Will served in the Royal Regiment of Wales before joining Harlequins in 1986. A year later, he made his international debut against France, and by 1988, aged just 22, he was appointed England captain. His military background gave him the discipline, clarity and composure to handle pressure, qualities he transferred seamlessly to his rugby career. This unique combination of youthful energy and measured leadership set the foundation for one of the most successful eras in English rugby history.

Guiding England through a golden period, Will’s leadership style helped deliver Grand Slam victories in 1991, 1992 and 1995, alongside Triple Crown triumphs and landmark wins against southern hemisphere giants Australia and New Zealand. By the time he retired from international rugby in 1996 with 72 caps and 54 points, he had cemented his place as one of the sport’s greatest leaders. His success was not only in victories, but also in the culture of belief, discipline and teamwork he fostered within his squad — qualities that continue to inspire leaders today.

Beyond rugby, Will has proven his business acumen through his corporate hospitality company, Will Carling Management Ltd, while also becoming a respected pundit and commentator. As a speaker, he draws on both his sporting and professional achievements to deliver powerful, practical lessons on leadership, motivation and achieving goals. He is hired for his ability to captivate audiences, offering memorable insights into what it takes to unite teams, overcome challenges and lead with purpose at the highest level.
