Will Butler-Adams is one of Britain’s most influential engineering leaders, best known as Group CEO of Brompton Bicycle. A Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering, Will has built his reputation on inspirational leadership rooted in technical credibility and long-term thinking. He has led one of the UK’s most admired manufacturing growth stories, transforming a specialist folding bike maker into a global brand while keeping production proudly based in London.

Will began his career in heavy industry after graduating with First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering from Newcastle University. He held senior roles at ICI and DuPont, where he became Plant Manager of a £60 million polyester facility, delivering record production volumes while improving reliability and reducing costs. These early experiences shaped his disciplined, people-focused approach to leadership. Will developed a deep respect for those closest to the work, embedding structured communication, safety and accountability into every team he leads.

He joined Brompton in 2002, became Director in 2006 and was appointed CEO in 2008. Under Will’s leadership, turnover grew from £2 million to more than £130 million, with the workforce expanding from 27 employees to over 750. He introduced lean manufacturing cells, invested in digital production systems, reformed shop floor pay to a skills-based structure and oversaw a major London factory move to support long-term capacity. Exports now reach more than 40 countries, and more than one million Bromptons are ridden worldwide. His achievements have been recognised with an OBE for services to industry, the Queen’s Award for Export and Innovation, and election as a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering.

As a keynote speaker, Will connects engineering precision with inspirational leadership. He speaks on scaling purpose-driven businesses, digital transformation, skills development and sustainable urban mobility. His philosophy of ‘built-out’ obsolescence, designing products that last a lifetime, reflects his broader belief in building organisations that endure. Clients consistently praise his warmth, clarity and practical insight. Will leaves audiences with tangible lessons on culture, resilience and responsible growth, drawn from real decisions made on the factory floor and in the boardroom.
