Wayne Hemingway’s journey from a student in need of quick cash to a celebrated designer and entrepreneur is a testament to his creative vision and business acumen. Best known as the founder of the fashion label Red or Dead, Wayne’s career has grown from humble beginnings to international acclaim. His path has seen him move seamlessly from fashion into retail and business consultancy, constantly showcasing his passion for originality and innovation. Today, he draws upon decades of experience to inspire others, sharing insights into creative thinking and the power of doing things differently.
The birth of Red or Dead was almost accidental. While studying, Wayne began selling his own clothes at Camden Market in London simply to earn some extra money. What began as a temporary gig quickly gained popularity, eventually leading to a permanent market presence and then 16 stalls. Capitalising on the growing appetite for streetwear and vintage fashion, Wayne opened a shop, which marked the true beginning of the brand’s success. Red or Dead became known for its edgy style and ethical approach, earning Wayne three British Fashion Council Street Style Awards and a strong following, including a notable collaboration with Dr Martens. The brand cemented its place in fashion history before being sold in 1999.
After parting with Red or Dead, Wayne channelled his values into HemingwayDesign, a company dedicated to improving everyday life through thoughtful design. His projects have included urban regeneration, innovative housing developments like the award-winning Staiths South Bank, and collaborative work with institutions such as The Institute of Directors. Wayne’s influence stretches beyond architecture and design; he has served on the Design Council Trustee Board, advised government on coastal regeneration, and holds a professorship at Northumbria University.

Wayne Hemingway is regularly booked to engage audiences at events, read their latest feedback below:
“Wayne Hemingway MBE who I loved ever since I heard him say he never wanted to be 40+ and still wearing jeans, (he does do other stuff) was as entertaining and as political as I remember at the Grampian Awards for Business Excellence. HemingwayDesign is truly one of the best executed brands and series of concepts I have seen, simple, direct, clear. The KiosKiosK model is start up and innovation genius. If you get the chance get in a room with the guy and listen, you will without a doubt learn something or at least be energised to go off and think harder.”
“Just finished listening to Wayne Hemingway MBE talk about buying quality clothing on the Jo Good show BBC Radio London. A breath of fresh air.”
