Before embarking on his coaching journey, Stuart was an accomplished rugby player. His playing career began with Headingley RFC and later progressed to Leeds RFU and the Leeds Tykes, where he became the club’s first player to achieve a century of appearances. Stuart also represented Wakefield RFC, contributing to victories in the 1990 and 1998 Yorkshire County Cup. Through his mother’s Scottish heritage, Stuart had the opportunity to play for Scotland at both U19 and U21 levels, showcasing his exceptional talent from an early age. Although his playing career was cut short by injury at the age of 30, Stuart’s determination and love for the sport propelled him into coaching, beginning with his role as Academy Manager for Yorkshire Carnegie Rugby Union Club in 2000.

Stuart’s coaching career quickly gained momentum. By 2005, he was promoted to Director of Rugby for Yorkshire Carnegie, and in 2007, he took on the pivotal role of Head of Elite Player Development for England Rugby. His tenure as Head Coach of England Rugby began in 2011, where he excelled in developing leadership skills, fostering effective communication, and building resilience under pressure. Following this, Stuart spent six successful years as Senior Coach for Leinster Rugby, leading them to numerous titles, before joining Racing 92 in France’s Top 14 league. Throughout his career, Stuart has become a recognised authority on leadership, resilience, and team management.
