Rebecca Adlington OBE is one of Britain’s most accomplished and beloved athletes, a double Olympic gold medallist, World and European Champion, and trailblazer in British swimming. At just nineteen, she captured the nation’s heart at the 2008 Beijing Olympics by winning gold in both the 400m and 800m freestyle events, becoming Britain’s first female Olympic swimming champion since 1960 and setting a world record in the process. Her historic achievement made her the most successful British swimmer in nearly half a century and a defining figure in the resurgence of British aquatic sport.
Rebecca’s success in Beijing marked the beginning of an extraordinary international career. She went on to claim double gold at the 2008 World Championships in Manchester, followed by World Championship gold in 2011 and multiple medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi. Her performances at the London 2012 Olympics added two bronze medals, confirming her status as one of the most decorated female Olympians in British history, alongside Katherine Grainger. She retired from competitive swimming in 2013 and was later inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, a fitting tribute to her impact on the sport.
Since retiring from competition, Rebecca has become a familiar and respected voice in sports broadcasting. She has provided commentary and expert analysis for the BBC across major events including the Rio 2016 Olympics, the World Aquatics Championships, the European Championships, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, and most recently, the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In 2024, she also served as a judge for The Sunday Times Sportswomen of the Year Awards, continuing her support for women in sport and emerging talent.
Away from the pool, Rebecca has shown remarkable resilience and authenticity, embracing life beyond elite sport with humour and openness. From appearing on I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here! to The Jump and Loose Women, she has used her platform to speak candidly about confidence, body image, and the challenges of life after success. As an inspirational speaker, Rebecca shares her story of determination, mental strength, and teamwork, offering invaluable lessons on handling pressure, overcoming adversity, and achieving lasting success both in and out of the pool.
