Dame Laura Kenny is Great Britain’s most decorated female Olympian, celebrated not only for her remarkable cycling career but also for her inspirational influence beyond sport. As President of Commonwealth Games England and a role model in the sporting world, Laura specialises in the team pursuit, omnium, scratch race, and madison disciplines. Laura’s talent emerged early, claiming three world titles before the age of twenty. She made her senior debut at the 2010 European Track Championships and quickly rose through the ranks, earning seven World Championship titles, 14 European gold medals, and significant success at the Commonwealth Games, where she claimed gold and bronze in 2022. Not limited to the track, she also thrived on the road, winning the British National Road Race Championship in 2014, along with the under-23 title. At the Tokyo 2020 Olympics (held in 2021), Laura added a silver medal in the Team Pursuit to her extensive medal tally.
Throughout her career, Laura has received numerous honours. In recognition of her services to cycling, she was appointed an OBE in 2013, a CBE in 2017, and most recently, a Dame in the 2022 New Year Honours. She also holds an Honorary Degree from the University of Essex. In 2024, she announced her retirement from professional cycling, concluding her career with an astonishing total of five Olympic gold medals, a figure unmatched by any other British female Olympian. Continuing her influence in the sport, she was announced as a Guardian columnist for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Laura’s story is not just one of medals and records. Born prematurely with a collapsed lung and later facing personal hardships, including an ectopic pregnancy, she has shown incredible resilience.
