John Mitchell is a professional rugby coach and former international player whose career has spanned some of the sport’s most prestigious teams across the globe. In 2025 he guided the England Women’s Red Roses to a historic Rugby World Cup victory, underlining his reputation as a world-class leader and strategist. Known for his ability to galvanise teams, nurture talent, and instil a culture of resilience, he brings unmatched insight into what it takes to build and lead high-performing groups. His extensive international experience and success at the highest level make him a compelling speaker on leadership, adaptability, and teamwork.

John’s playing career began in New Zealand, where he first represented Fraser Tech in 1984 before going on to play for the Waikato Colts. By the late 1980s he had established himself as a formidable forward, leading Waikato with distinction. In 1989, he became Captain of the province, eventually recording an impressive 86 games as Captain, more than any other player in Waikato’s history. Even when injury threatened his playing career, he continued to inspire his side until his retirement in 1995. His leadership qualities were evident throughout his playing days, providing a natural transition into the world of coaching.

His coaching career has been remarkable in both its breadth and achievements. Starting in 1996 as a technical adviser and forwards coach, John quickly progressed, taking charge of Sale Sharks before returning to New Zealand, where he became head coach of the Chiefs and later the national team in 2001. He went on to make history as the first New Zealander to coach an Australian Super Rugby franchise with the Western Force, and later held senior coaching roles in South Africa, the USA, and Japan. From 2018 to 2022, he was defence coach for England and Japan respectively, before being appointed head coach of the England women’s team in 2023 – leading them to the world title two years later. In recognition of his service to the Rugby Union, John was appointed OBE in the 2026 New Year Honours List.

John’s wealth of experience across cultures and rugby systems gives him a rare perspective on leadership under pressure. He speaks with authority on building winning environments, overcoming setbacks, and adapting to change, lessons drawn from decades at the top of international sport. His ability to translate these principles into broader leadership and business contexts makes him an inspiring and practical choice for audiences seeking to learn from one of rugby’s most accomplished coaches.
