Martin Johnson CBE is one of the most celebrated leaders in British sporting history, best known for captaining England to victory at the 2003 Rugby World Cup. A legendary Leicester Tigers, England and British & Irish Lions lock, Martin built his reputation through uncompromising standards, composure under pressure and an ability to inspire those around him. He remains the only player to have captained the British & Irish Lions on two separate tours and was the first Northern Hemisphere captain to lift the Webb Ellis Cup. Today, Martin is hired as an inspirational leadership speaker, translating the lessons behind extraordinary sporting success into insights for organisations, executives and teams.

Martin developed his rugby career with Leicester Tigers, having also spent time playing in New Zealand with King Country early in his development. He made his England debut in 1993 and established himself as an imposing presence within the national side, ultimately earning 84 international caps. His leadership qualities were also recognised by the British & Irish Lions, whom he captained during their victorious 1997 tour of South Africa and again in Australia in 2001. At club level, Martin captained Leicester during an exceptional period of success, including four consecutive English league titles and back-to-back European Cups between 1999 and 2002.

Martin’s defining achievement came in 2003 when he led England through an outstanding season that included a Six Nations Grand Slam and culminated in Rugby World Cup victory over Australia in Sydney. His leadership throughout the tournament became synonymous with England’s ability to remain composed when confronted by enormous pressure and expectation. After retiring from professional rugby, Martin returned to the international environment as England Team Manager in 2008, later guiding the national side to the 2011 Six Nations title. His contribution to rugby was further recognised when he was inducted into the World Rugby Hall of Fame in 2011.

Martin is hired as a speaker for his exceptional first-hand understanding of leadership, teamwork and peak performance. He shares the principles behind creating winning cultures, maintaining standards and making decisions when expectations are at their highest. Martin has spoken at corporate and sporting events, including headlining Champions UK plc’s annual rugby dinner, where he shared his experiences of England’s historic World Cup campaign. His experience captaining world-class teams makes Martin particularly compelling for audiences seeking practical lessons in inspirational leadership, resilience and collective performance.
